Note:   A stately symbol of the South, the Southern Magnolia is found in moist, fertile soils throughout the region.  In open spaces, the Southern Magnolia will form a dense canopy, branched low to the ground, appearing as a large shrub.  In the urban landscape, the species is usually limbed to form a trunk.  The large, leathery leaves fall throughout the year and may become a maintenance concern.
